Long ago, Rorith was a world of cities, or small kingdoms. Somehow, one of the dominant ways that rulers extended their power, was to name things. For instance, in the second Rorend Era, Sigtol the Eighth renamed all cups “Sigtolinas.” If you lived under his kingdom, you were expected to no-longer say the word cup anymore. If you were caught in front of dignitaries using the wrong word — any of a hundred words that your king has deemed new vocabulary, prison or worse could be your consequence.
This emphasis on language has permeated the culture. To claim a word is to claim power.
